The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is a Protestant denomination of Christianity headquartered in Chicago. The church was formed in 1988 with the joining of the American Luther Church, The Lutheran Church in America, and The Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches. Presided over by an elected Bishop, the church maintains a fairly liberal view in social politics, while continuing to preach the message of the bible. As with many ministries, the ELCA works for social justice throughout the country through programs, partnerships, and workshops. Volunteer programs nationally and internationally set the standard for service within the church. Advocacy, Environmental work, HIV & AIDS, Women's studies, and Nonviolence are just a few of the service opportunities emphasized.
