Based in El Segundo, California, DirecTV is a broadcast satellite service that has nearly twenty million subscribers. Founded in 1994, DirecTV offers customers local TV stations, broadcast networks, subscription based channels, satellite radio, and private video services. Subscribers use a satellite dish to receive the compressed digital information sent to their television by one of the broadcast centers located in Colorado and California. Subscribers must use a receiver manufactured by either DirecTV or a third party. The receiver allows for all regular broadcast as well as HDTV channels.
