The Black Family Channel was the only completely black-owned and operated cable television network. While other popular black entertainment channels like BET and TV One may broadcast exclusively African American content the networks are co-owned by larger companies such as Comcast and Viacom. The Black Family Channel was founded in 1999 and specialized in wholesome, black family entertainment. Programming included religious programming, sports, music, talk shows, and even children oriented programs. The netowork was founded by five influential and prominent African American public figures. They were: attorney Willie Gary, baseball player Cecil Fielder, boxing champion Evander Holyfield, Marlon Jackson from the Jackson 5, and television broadcaster Alvin James. MORE
