Animal Planet is a cable and satellite television network co-owned by Discovery Communications, the same parent company that owns the Discovery Channel. Beginning in 1996, its programming was centered around human and animal relationships both domestically and in the wild. In 2008 Animal Planet relaunched itself with a new logo and brand in order to "sheds its soft and furry side for programming and an image with more bite." Eight new shows and specials were premiered in February of that year, targeted for a more mature audience. Newer shows, such as Meerkat Manor and Orangutan Island embody the new emphasis on "predation programming" and immersive story telling. Animal Planet is also well-known for its annual stunt program, the Puppy Bowl, where during the afternoon of the NFL's Super Bowl, puppies are put to play on a mock football field. MORE
