ABC (American Broadcast Company) is an American television network that was created in 1943 from the former and now defunct NBC Blue radio network. ABC made its first television broadcast in 1948 and was known as one of the big three television networks with programming that has contributed to American popular culture. ABC is apart of the Disney-ABC Television Group and is own by The Walt Disney Company. ABC is commonly referred to as the ‘Alphabet Network’ due to its signature letters being the first three letters in the Latin alphabet. During ABC’s formative years, the Alphabet Network was integral in capturing the younger, urban viewers making it an attractive property to many big investors. Highly rated primetime sitcoms helped the network’s continual rise in the 1960’s. These sitcoms, many of which are iconic classics in American television are, ‘Bewitched’, ‘The Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch. ABC’s dominance reigned supreme into the 1980’s with such series as ‘Three’s Company’, ‘Laverne & Shirley’, ‘Webster’, ‘Dynasty’, MacGyver’, ‘Who’s The Boss?’, and ‘The Wonder Years’. As a way to boost ratings on Friday night, ABC implemented the TGIF motif with family-oriented programming such as ‘Full House’, ‘Home Improvement’, ‘Family Matters’ and ‘Step by Step’.
