ABC Family is an American television network aimed toward teens, families, and younger audiences. The channel began as The CBN Satellite Service in April of 1977 as part of the Christian Broadcasting Network. Televangelist Pat Robertson founded the channel as an extension of his ministry. In 1988, it became known as The CBN Family Channel, and later just The Family Channel in 1990 when it made too much money and threatened the Christian Broadcasting Network's nonprofit standing. During this time, the channel stopped airing exclusively religious programming and branched out to shows gears toward kids, teens, and families. In July of 1997, The Family Channel was sold to Fox and renamed Fox Family Channel soon after. Fox aired many kids shows and made for television movies, but Disney bought the channel in 2001 and stopped most of the original programming of the Fox days. Disney bought it with the intention of using it to re-air ABC's programming without realizing that ABC did not own most of the syndication rights to its content. It was then designed to become XYZ, a channel marketed toward college students and a hipper young audience. The name ABC Family came about when executives realized that the sale of the channel included a clause stating that the network must always contain the word "family." ABC Family now uses the slogan "A New Kind of Family" and features a lot of original series and movies geared toward older teen audiences. In 2008, ABC Family launched ABC Family HD. MORE
