The Grateful Dead is one of the most influential American Rock Bands of all time. They formed in 1965 around the San francisco Bay Area and wer pioneers of the jam band style. The band was comprised of Jerry Garcia (on banjo and guitar), Bob Weir (on guitar), Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan (on blues organ), Phil Lesh (on Bass) and Bill Kreutzmann (on drums). The Grateful Dead had an eclectic and original musical style that combined the sounds of rock, bluegrass, folk, blues, country, reggae, jazz, space rock and psychedelia. Their live performances were known for their extensive and long improvised musical interludes. Their psychedelic musical style grew out of meeting Ken Kasey in the early 60s and becoming the house band for his famous acid tests. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked The Grateful Dead as the 55th greatest musical artists of all time.
