What A Way To Go

What a Way to Go! is a lavish, big-budget 1964 comedy with a stellar cast, including Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Gene Kelly, Robert Cummings, and Shirley MacLaine as wealthy widow Louisa Foster. Louisa believes she carries a curse and tries to donate all her millions to the IRS. The tax department sends her for a psychiatric assessment. Louisa then tells her story from the psychiatrist's couch through flashbacks and fantasy sequences that feature lavish musical numbers and costumes. Determined to marry a poor man for love, Louisa resists her mother's attempts to match her with the town's richest man, Leonard Crawley (Dean Martin). She instead marries Edgar Hopper (Dick Van Dyke), who is content to live impoverished, but happy, in a shack. After being ridiculed, Hopper works to bankrupt Crawley and run him out of town by becoming rich and successful himself. His hard work causes a heart attack, and Louisa becomes a millionaire widow. She goes on to marry three more times in an attempt to marry a poor man for love, but instead each husband gets wealthier and then dies in some bizarre circumstance.
