We Were Soldiers is a war movie set in Vietnam. It has a stellar cast (almost a cast of thousands). Army Lt. Col. Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), Sergeant Major Plumley (Sam Elliot), and helicopter pilot "Snake" (Greg Kinnear) are very believable characters. Based on a true battle, American and Vietnamese forces fight in an area known as the "Valley of Death" early in the war. Moore is a soldier who is fiercely loyal to his troops, promising them that he will be the first one on the battlefield and the last to leave. As the battle progresses (and it was truly huge), the movie focuses not only on the fighting, but on the relationships between Moore and Plumley, as well as families back home in America.
