Way Past Cool, directed by Adam Davidson, is a 2000 coming-of-age drama, based on the novel of the same name by Jess Mowry. The film is set in "Oaktown," more commonly known as Oakland, California, and revolves around a group of young black kids trying to survive in a city full of poverty, drugs and gangsters. The kids range in age from 12 to 13 and refer to themselves as "The Friends," the leader of their group is Gordon (Jonathan Roger Neal), but Lyon (Wes Charles Jr.) is the heart and soul of the group. The friends rely on each other to stay out of as much trouble as they can, but when a 16-year-old drug dealer moves in to their neighborhood they find this more difficult than they ever had before.
