Waterworld is a science-fiction action film set in a future where Earth is submerged in water and humans must fight for survival on the lawless seas. The film follows a sailor referred to only as the Mariner (Kevin Costner), a solitary "drifter" who trades dirt, a valuable substance now that all land is underwater and people live on artificial atolls. The Mariner stops at an atoll to make a trade but is detained when pirates, known as Smokers, attack. Orphan Enola (Tina Majorino) and her guardian Helen (Jeanne Tipplehorn), citizens of the atoll, rescue the Mariner in exchange for helping them escape, since the Smokers have come to the island to capture Enola.
