The companion disc to the official NPS Booker T. Washington documentary UP FROM SLAVERY - BOOKER T.'s BIRTHPLACE (WINTER) (2005), this subsequent video takes a look at the James Burrough's plantation in the Summer months. The event known as Food, Fiber, and Flowers takes us into the working gardens of the park, and the period food and flowers they grow there ( there's even a period watermelon the visitors can enjoy at the end!). When the weather is agreeable, they even grow tobacco there, which was the equivalent of cotton in Virginia. We were even fortunate enough to be able to interview Mr. James Holmes, former principle at Booker T. Elementary, and subsequently the nation's first black park ranger!
