Unbreakable is a 2000 American psychological superhero thriller film directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan. As David comes to terms with his newfound ability, he begins to test his limits, discovering that he is nearly indestructible. Elijah, who has a rare disease that causes his bones to break easily, believes himself to be David's opposite, as David is unbreakable while Elijah is extremely breakable. The two men begin a slow and complicated dance as they explore their respective abilities and limitations. The two are drawn into a confrontation when Elijah realizes that David may be more than just a man with superhuman strength. Elijah's quest for meaning and purpose in his life has driven him to commit crimes to find someone to match his own abilities, and David may be the answer. David, however, is hesitant to embrace this role, fearing that he may become too much of a superhero. Throughout the movie, we get glimpses of David's relationship with his wife Audrey, who struggles to maintain the balance between her supportive role as David's wife and her own desire for him to live a normal life. We also see Elijah's complicated history with his mother and the impact it had on his life. The film is beautifully shot and directed, with M. Night Shyamalan's signature slow-burn style building tension as David and Elijah circle each other. Bruce Willis is terrific as David, conveying his reluctance and vulnerability with great subtlety. Samuel L. Jackson is equally strong as Elijah, who is at once creepy and tragic. Robin Wright is excellent as Audrey, giving us glimpses of the loneliness and desperation that her character experiences as she tries to hold her family together. The themes of the movie are explored deeply and thoughtfully. The idea of ordinary people with extraordinary abilities is an interesting one, and the film examines the idea of whether or not we should embrace our own power or try to live a normal life. The film also delves into the idea of the hero's journey and the impact that heroism can have on those around us.
