Tyler Perry's Diary of a Mad Black Woman is Tyler Perry's (of Tyler Perry's House of Payne) 2005 opus based on the play, Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Marital problems are happening in the romantic comedy about what it takes to be a family. Madea, the elder grandmother of the protagonist helps her daughter get back at a cheating husband. Comedy and romance intertwine in this Tyler Perry-written film. The film stars Kimberly Elise (of John Q), Steve Harris (of Minority Report) and Shemar Moore (of How to Marry A Billionaire: A Christmas Tale). The criticism of the film was mostly negative, garnering a 36 on Metacritic. The Philadelphia Inquirer claimed it was "the Labradoodle of inspirational romantic-comedy-melodramas" while the Miami Herald wrote it was "downright awful." Despite some negative reviews, a sequel was released in 2006 called Medea's Family Reunion.
