True Heart Susie (silent)

True Heart Susie is a 1919 silent drama directed by D.W. Griffith. True Heart Susie (Lillian Gish) lives up to her name. The pretty young woman is also thoughtful, sweet and tries hard to be a pure and decent person. Her neighbor, William Jenkins (Robert Harron), notices Susie, but is not sure how to approach her about his romantic feelings. Little does he realize that Susie feels the very same way for him. Even though she cannot express her love to William, Susie figures out a way to help him. In secret, she sells her family's prized cow and anonymously donates the money to William, allowing him to pursue his dreams of going to college. Years pass and Susie still thinks fondly of her neighbor, hoping that he is putting her gift to good use. When she hears that William is going to return home, Susie imagines that all her dreams are about to come true. However, William returns with a wife, Bettina (Clarine Seymour), whose wild ways are completely at odds with True Heart Susie's life philosophy.
