They Call Me Mr. Tibbs, the sequel to In the Heat of the Night, is a crime drama directed by Gordon Douglas. The film opens with the murder of Joy Sturges (Linda Towne), a prostitute working in the San Francisco area. Lieutenant Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) begins investigating the case after his friend, Reverend Logan Sharpe (Martin Landau), is named as a suspect in the killing of the young woman. Sharpe went to see Joy just before her death to provide counseling, and his connection with her places him under suspicion.
