The Workshop is a documentary from filmmaker Jamie Morgan about what true happiness is and how to find it. The film is a product of a ten-day stint that Morgan spent at a self-help workshop in Northern California, after deciding that he was unhappy with his life in London. In The Workshop, Guru Paul Lowe, a professional spiritual advisor, challenges participants to get honest with themselves about relationships, lose their inhibitions, and get out of their clothes. The film follows the participants as they have breakthroughs, breakdowns, and realize the importance of breakups. Lowe promotes sexual adventure and freedom, letting go of conventional religion and God, and opening one’s mind to the existence of aliens. Very new-age-y, with some remnants of the 70s’ hippie movement, The Workshop is a ninety-four minute look at a gathering of zen-seeking people, all with their own hang-ups, but also significantly fewer inhibitions than the average American. While some of their zoned-out facial expressions may make one wonder if they have just meditated for a really long time, or if some illicit substances were involved, the documentary provides an inside look at the alternative ‘cleansing’ camps that the West Coast enjoys. After all, we cannot leave all the fun to Tom Cruise.MORE[EDIT]
