The Work's The Thing

The Work's The Thing is a short video about Paul Housley, an artist who spends an inordinate amount of time painting lifelike art of very ordinary items. The movie first follows him as he hunts through street sales for natty kitsch for models in his art. He finds an old bluebird salt shaker with cracks running all over the surface, and takes it home to paint. His home is filled with paintings he has done of ordinary things that he still has lying around his place. The camera pans around the room, first stopping at a painting of a toy airplane, and then moving on to stop at the actual toy airplane. The same is true of many other common items around his home, and the art that he has made of them. During the entire film, Housley sits at his easel, creating a painting of the bluebird salt shaker. He talks about how he spends his time simply focusing on his painting and nothing else. His paintings are so detailed that they almost look like photographs. He tries to explain why such detail is really art, and how his focus is everything in making his art. He repeats many times that it is the work, that an artist should lose himself in the work, and if he takes it too seriously then he cannot do that. So he doesn't take himself seriously, and then he can lose himself in his art, and because of that his simple art is acclaimed. MORE [EDIT]
