The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill celebrates the urban wilderness in San Francisco. Bohemian Mark Bittner has been searching for his direction in life. Homeless and disappointed in his music career, he begins feeding the feral flock of parrots that have made Telegraph Hill their home. The parrots are primarily Red-masked Parakeets, descended from pets that were either released or that escaped from their owners. Bittner watches over the birds and sees their behavior sometimes mimics that of humans. He seeks out birders and avian experts to learn more about the flock. When his care of the birds attracts national and international attention, the flock becomes endangered. Bittner works to ensure the birds, who he states are perfectly capable of caring for themselves, never learn to depend on humans for their survival. The 2003 documentary, directed by Judy Irving, is based on the book by Bittner. It won the 2006 Genesis Award for documentary film.MORE[EDIT]
