The Valachi Papers is a 1972 crime film starring Charles Bronson, based on the novel of the same name by author Peter Maas. The film, like the novel, tells the story of Joseph Valachi. In the 1960s Valachi made history as the first member of the Italian Mafia to become an informant for the Federal government. The movie begins with Valachi in prison, alongside the boss of his crime family. His boss thinks Valachi is an informant. Valachi isn't an informant—not yet—but he knows an attempt will be made on his life by a Mafia hit man. With a death on his hands and few options, Valachi sits down with Federal agents and tells them his life story, beginning with his criminal development as a rebellious child.
