The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a 1964 French musical starring Catherine Deneuve as a young girl in love. Director Jacques Demy uses no dialogue, only singing, to tell a bittersweet love story in a colorful depiction of a small town in France. Teenager Genevi''ve (Catherine Deneuve) lives a boring existence with her widowed mother, Madame Emery (Anne Vernon), running an umbrella store in Cherbourg. Then, Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), a handsome young auto mechanic in the neighborhood, captures her attention and the pair begin a passionate romance. Meanwhile, Genevi''ve's mother has noticed that Roland Cassard (Marc Michel), an older and wealthy gentleman, wants to marry the lovely Genevi''ve, which would secure her future. Guy receives a mandatory call to military service in the Algerian War and the young couple consummate their love, resulting in an unexpected pregnancy. After he joins the Army, Genevi''ve does not hear from Guy, so the melancholy young woman to accept Cassard's proposal for marriage and promises to raise the child as his own.
