The Song of Hiawatha

The Song of Hiawatha is a dramatic western film directed by Jeffrey Shore based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poetic epic that tells the story of Hiawatha (Litefoot), the legendary Native American leader of the Ojibway, as French trapper Bertrand (Michael Rooker), priest Marcel (David Strathairn), and their interpreter O Kagh (Graham Greene). It seems that while the legend of Hiawatha has spread far and wide, from the stories of the young Hiawatha searching for his godly father to avenge his mother, who died from a broken heart, to his meeting with his sharp-tongued wife, Minnehaha (Irene Bedard), to the protection of his people by facing the malicious Pearlfeather (Flint Eagle) with his best friend Chibiabos (Adam Beach). As the Bertrand and Marcel hear more and more of the tales of Hiawatha in their journey to find him, Marcel is caught in the battle between the long-believed “heathen” mentality of the American culture and the reality of the peaceful and wise views of the Ojibway.
