The Scalphunters is a comedy western film made by legendary filmmaker Sydney Pollack. Made in 1968, the film was only Pollack's third film to date. The Scalphunters centers around a fur tradesman, a man named Joe Bass (Burt Lancaster). After a successful round in hunting, Joe makes his way back to the trading post where he can sell his furs. However, he is trapped by a group of Kiowa Indians on the way over. They ask him to relinquish his furs in exchange for an intelligent slave named Joseph (Ozzie Davis). Joe is reluctant to make the exchange, but realizes he does not stand a chance against the Indians, so they make the swap.
