The Red Balloon is a nearly wordless 1956 children's film about a young boy (Pascal Lamorisse) who innocently frees a red balloon tied to a lamppost. The vibrantly colored balloon then follows the boy throughout the streets of Paris, seeming genuinely alive, with a playful and mischievous personality. It follows the boy to a Parisian bakery and a street market, even finding time to stop and flirt with a blue balloon being hauled around by a young girl. When the balloon is attacked by a gang of boys with a slingshot, the film takes a melancholy turn. Will the boy be able to save the vulnerable red balloon? This 34-minute film is often read by critics as an allegory of innocence and violence and remains popular with adults and children alike. The Red Balloon is directed by Albert Lamorisse, who also directed White Mane, a 1953 black-and-white short often paired with The Red Balloon in theatrical revivals.MORE[EDIT]
