The Queen and I is a documentary depicting the unlikely and politically dangerous friendship between Iranian-Swedish filmmaker Nahid Persson Sarverstani and Farah Pahlavi, the Queen/Empress of Iran. Pahlavi is the widow of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran who was overthrown by religious fundamentalists in 1979. Sarvestani escaped Iran in 1979 as well. A dedicated communist, she feared what might happen to her under the new regime of the Ayatollah Khomeini. Sarvestani's anger at his theocratic regime and resentment at what has become of modern Iran is juxtaposed with Pahlavi's detachment from her country's troubles and the role played by her husband in the lead up to the 1979 revolution.
