The Phantom of the Opera is a 2004 musical romantic drama thriller film by director Joel Schumacher, based on the novel by Gaston Leroux and the Broadway stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, both of the same name, and starring Gerald Butler, Emmy Rossum, and Patrick Wilson. The movie has the same premise as the book and the musical, the romance between a disfigured musical genius, Erik (Gerald Butler), hidden away in a Parisian opera house, and a beautiful young woman, Christine (Emmy Rossum), whom he trains and, during, training, falls in love with. But during one of Christine's performances, her childhood friend, Raoul (Patrick Wilson), hears her sing and falls in love with her as well. Erik is terribly jealous and kidnaps her, but Raoul will stop at nothing to save his love, even if it means taking on a mad man.
