The Night of the Generals

The Night of the Generals is a classic crime drama that shows viewers that military generals are not above the law. The mystery opens in post-World War II Poland where a prostitute turns up butchered on a Nazi military base. The Polish army assigns Officer Major Grau (Omar Sharif) to investigate the case, which leads him to three suspects, General von Seydlitz-Gabler (Charles Gray), General Kahlenberg (Donald Pleasence), and General Tanz (Peter O'Toole). Grau soon discovers that two of the men are plotting to assassinate the dictator, Adolf Hitler. Grau's superiors then transfer him to Paris so that he can't interrupt the general's plans. The case goes unsolved, and the film jumps twenty years later to 1960s Paris, where another prostitute has turned up dead. Grau's friend from Poland, Inspector Morand (Philippe Noise), takes on the case and the inspector finds similarities between the murder in Paris and the one in Poland twenty years before. Through a series of flashbacks, the three generals, now living in Paris, recount an incident in 1944 Paris. Their stories lead to Grau's murder during Hitler's assignation attempt. Morand now must find the murderer of his friend and the prostitutes, using evidence from twenty years in the past. MORE [EDIT]
