The Milagro Beanfield War

The Milagro Beanfield War depicts a small fictional New Mexican farming village targeted for acquisition by a wealthy resort developer. Directed by Robert Redford and released in 1988, this movie highlights the challenges of living and working together in a community, especially when powerful monied interests arrive. A wealthy developer, Ladd Devine (Richard Bradford), has big plans to turn the 300-year-old farm community into a bustling resort town, but only if he can acquire every parcel of land. Despite the dedicated opposition of activist Ruby Archuleta (Sonia Braga) and reporter Charlie Bloom (John Heard), the entire town agrees to sell out and move on -- except Joe Mondragon (Chick Vennera). But back-room deals and big business politics have cut off water rights to Joe's farm. Desperate, nearly destitute, but still determined, Joe becomes an unlikely thorn in the developer's side, ultimately threatening their entire project.
