The Mambo Kings was produced in 1992. Starring Antonio Banderas and Armand Assante, this drama flick is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love" by Oscar Hijuelos. Set in 1950s Cuba, the story follows brother musicians Cesar (played by Assante) and Nestor (portrayed by Banderas) Castillo as they flee their native Havana and eventually land in New York City, where they work tedious jobs and attempt to live their dream of being mambo stars. Fate grants the struggling brothers an opportunity to guest star on an episode of "I Love Lucy," and they become overnight sensations.
