The Madness of King George is a 1994 film based on a play of a similar name by Alan Bennett. Directed by Nicholas Hytner, the film tells the true story of King George III's deteriorating mental health condition and its ramifications on the monarchy. As doctors use their relatively primitive practices to try and cure him, George slips deeper and deeper into insanity. Three different methods are used to try and cure him, including stool and urine analysis, behavior modification, and blistering and purges. George's relationship with his son, the Prince of Wales, is strained as he is exiled until his full recovery. Eventually George's illness abates, and order is restored to the English monarchy. Benett's screenplay makes apparent the humor in dire situations, and Hytner plays that to full effect.
