The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Special Extended Edition) is the final installment in director Peter Jackson's epic, Academy Award winning Lord of the Rings trilogy. Released by New Line Cinema in 2003 and based on the conclusion of author J.R.R. Tolkien's classic Lord of the Rings saga, the movie tells the story of the ultimate, final battle for Middle-Earth. As Sauron (Sala Baker) starts the final stages of his conquest of Middle-Earth, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and Théoden (Bernard Hill) King of Rohan rally their forces in an effort to defend Gondor's capital. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) claims the throne of Gondor and conjures a ghost army to help him defeat Sauron. Even with full strength of arms, they realize that they will not be able to win; the fate of Middle-Earth is in the hands of the two hobbits, Sam (Sean Astin) and Frodo (Elijah Wood). The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King features new scenes and additional footage not seen in the theatrical version, and also includes updated music and special effects.
