The Leopard (English version)

The Leopard (English version) is a dubbed version of the 1963 Italian film by Luchino Visconti. It has been edited to 161 minutes for English-speaking audiences and stars Burt Lancaster, who speaks his own lines (in the Italian version, Lancaster's lines are dubbed into Italian). This historical drama centers on the Prince of Salina (Burt Lancaster) during the Garibaldi revolution of 1860-1862. The old order is in upheaval as Italy's middle classes revolt against the wealthy aristocracy that the Prince represents. A different kind of revolution threatens the balance of power within the Prince's family: as he finds his own influence and fortune waning, he must come to terms with the rise of the younger generation -- namely, the Prince's nephew and his charming fianc''e. Although the sets are grand, Lancaster's acclaimed performance grounds the film. Critics have praised The Leopard as an epic yet intimate portrait of society, and individuals, in transition.
