The Joe Louis Story

The Joe Louis Story is a 1953 movie about the life and career of the World Heavyweight Champion boxer, Joe Louis. Directed by Robert Gordon, the movie features Coley Wallace, Hilda Simms, Paul Stewart and James Edwards. Known as "The Brown Bomber," Louis' career spanned longer than any other boxer in history. The film follows the roots of Louis' (Coley Wallace) career, which started in the early 1930's and ended abruptly in the 1950's. The fight scenes, which are taken from several of Louis' bouts, shows his crowning achievement of knocking out Max Schmeling for the World Heavyweight title. The footage also shows his lowest point of his ill-advised boxing comeback against Rocky Marciano, which ends badly. Although Louis is considered one of the greatest pugilists ever, his career was marred by many difficulties including racism, money woes and a contentious marriage to his wife, Marva (Hilda Simms), which ends in divorce.
