The Importance of Being Earnest is a 2002 comedy of mistaken identity directed by Oliver Parker. Based on a play by Oscar Wilde, the film follows bachelors Algernon 'Algy' Moncrieff (Rupert Everett) and John 'Jack' Worthing (Colin Firth) who each independently take on the name "Earnest" in order to escape the oppression of their full-time lives. Algy, for his part, becomes the libertine Earnest when the responsibilities of taking care of his neice Cecily become too much for him. Jack escapes to the countryside whenever he needs to avoid the burden of a social engagement.
