The Great Mr. Handel is a 1942 historical film that dramatizes the creation of one of George Frideric Handel's best known works: "Messiah." Handel (Wilfrid Lawson), who initially enjoys both royal patronage and widespread popularity in London, experiences a falling out with the Prince of Wales (Max Kirby). After Handel becomes annoyed with the Prince's behavior during a performance, the Prince swears never to attend another one - thus depriving Handel of his royal patronage. Instead the Prince begins to pay various thugs to disrupt any performance of Handel's work. Stripped of his income and his popularity, Handel is driven into debt and his health begins to decline.
