The Goodbye Girl

The Goodbye Girl is a quirky 1977 romantic comedy that won leading man Richard Dreyfus an Academy Award. Not only has Broadway dancer Paula McFadden (Marsha Mason) just gotten dumped by her boyfriend, he has sublet their apartment to an obnoxious actor, Eliot Garfield (Richard Dreyfuss). Due to the ridiculous nature of New York real estate, Paul and her wise-beyond-her-years daughter, Lucy (Quinn Cummings), have to share their small place with Eliot. Tensions mount, due in no small part to Eliot's curious living habits-he sleeps in the nude, strums the guitar late at night and meditates. Paula, who is still hurting from a series of bad relationships, wants nothing to do with men. Their feisty, quip-filled conflicts eventually turn into romantic interest, which 10-year-old Lucy encourages. Herbert Ross ("Steel Magnolia") directs a fast and funny script from playwright Neil Simon ("The Odd Couple"), which also won a Golden Globe for Best Picture. MORE [EDIT]
