The Godfather Part II continues the story of the Corleone crime family by exploring how it began and revealing what transpired following the events contained in the Godfather. Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) leaves Sicily following the murder of his father by the local crime boss. He comes to America hoping to find a better life for his family. Little by little, however, he slips into a life of crime and ultimately creates a massive syndicate that he controls. Many years later, his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino) struggles to retain control of the Corleone as it is besieged by both fellow crime families and the government.
