The Gates is a documentary that follows artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude as they install their Japanese-inspired exhibit in Central Park in New York City. The exhibit consisted of 7,503 vinyl "gates" hung with deep saffron-colored nylon fabric along 23 miles of pathways through the park. The temporary piece of art was first visualized by the artists in 1979. In 2003, they were finally granted permission by the city and the exhibit opened on February 12, 2005. The documentary begins with the artists' journey through the city's cultural bureaucracy including the office of the parks commissioner, the Cultural Commission, the Manhattan Borough Parks Committee and other groups.
