The Ex is a touching story of a couple that has it all until a baby comes into the mix. Tom Reilly (Zach Braff) and Sofia Kowalaski (Amanda Peet) are exact opposites, but somehow this works for their relationship. They are great together; Sofia is a successful attorney at law and Tom is a slacker cook who slides from job to job without a care. Sofia discovers that she is pregnant and volunteers to stay home with their child, which means that Tom will have to support the new family all on his own. Like always, Tom gets fired and has to take a new job in Ohio. This puts Tom and Sofia in the same town where Sofia had a semi-serious relationship with Chip (Jason Bateman).
