The End of the Affair

The End of the Affair is an intelligent 1999 drama about adulterous love and redemption based on a novel by Graham Greene. Writer Maurice Bendrix (Ralph Fiennes) encounters an old acquaintance, the troubled Henry Miles (Stephen Rea) on a gloomy London night after World War 2 has ended. Henry confesses that he believes his wife, Sarah (Julianne Moore), has been unfaithful. He hopes Maurice will help him find out the truth by hiring a private detective. In flashback, it is revealed that Maurice and Sarah had a passionate affair during the war, which Sarah ended abruptly and without explanation. Still susceptible to jealousy that Sarah could love another, Maurice hires Mr. Parkis (Ian Hart) to follow her. Not simply helping an old friend or appeasing his own guilt, Maurice needs to know why she left him.
