The Deadly Affair is a British espionage thriller set in London and directed by Sidney Lumet and is based on John le Carre's popular first novel, Call for the Dead. Le Carre's series of books centers around the life and work of double agent Charles Dobbs, played in the film by James Mason. When the death of Samuel Fennan, an official at the Foreign Office, is ruled a suicide, Dobbs (James Mason) just can't shake the feeling that there is more to the story. After catching Fennan's widow Elsa (Simone Signoret) in a white lie he pursues the investigation.
