The Commitments

The Commitments is an Irish film released in 1991. Based on Roddy Doyle’s novel of the same name, the first installment in Doyle’s “The Barrytown Trilogy” and the first to be adapted into a film. The story revolves a group of young, unemployed Dubliners, led by Jimmy Rabbitte, who start an American Soul band and dream of musical stardom. Rabbitte dreams of managing the greatest band in the world, and he just might get his wish. The Commitments have what it takes, but they can’t stand each other. Will they be able to hold it together long enough to hit the big time? The film was hugely successful in the 1990’s, only surpassed, perhaps, by it’s legitimately incredibly soundtrack. The entire cast of the film played their own instruments and sang their own parts. Two cast members of the film even started their own band after its release, and toured extensively, playing only music from the film. MORE [EDIT]
