The Castle is a 1997 dark comedy directed by Michael Haneke and based on the novel "Das Schloss" by Franz Kafka. Set in modern day Austria, K. (Ulrich Muhe) is a land surveyor who has been sent to the castle to do some work. When he arrives at the village surrounding the castle, he finds that no one is expecting him. The villagers are reluctant to have anything to do with him, and they thwart his every effort to gain entrance to the castle. He is unable to get a room at the inn, but the innkeeper relents and lets him sleep on a mattress on the floor of the parlor.
