The Butterfly is a 2002 French film starring Michael Serrault and Claire Bouanich and directed by Philippe Muyl. Elsa (Bouanich) is a nine-year-old girl who recently moved into a new apartment with her mother. Next-door lives Julien (Serrault), an aging widower who is an avid butterfly collector. When Elsa's mother is away (which is quite often), Elsa finds herself befriending Julien. When Julien ventures off to Vercors plateau in the Alps for a weeklong trek to find a rare species of butterfly, Elsa secretly follows him. When she reveals herself to him, he is upset, but has little choice but to let her stay. On their trek the two bond over Julien's recently deceased son, who was also a butterfly collector.
