The Bounty

The Bounty is the lush 1984 adaptation of much-filmed story of the famous mutiny. In this 1984 version, the conflict between Captain William Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) and First Mate Fletcher Christian (Mel Gibson), unlike earlier versions which depicted Bligh as a tyrant, instead portrays both men as complex and admirable, but split between a sense of duty and a respect for human nature. In 1788, after a difficult and dangerous 10-month journey, the Bounty crew finally lands in Tahiti, where they are to gather breadfruit for transport back to England. The weary sailors revel in the free lifestyle and beautiful women on the island. Meanwhile, Captain Bligh tries to uphold the proper British decorum. When the time comes to return to England, tensions build between the crew and the officers, leading to a mutiny led by Christian. Bligh and his loyal officers are set adrift in a small boat with little chance for survival in the rough waters. Fletcher tries to return to Tahiti, but is sent away by the Tahitian ruler. Fearful of repercussions from other British vessels, the Bounty drifts in search of a place to hide. MORE [EDIT]
