The Awful Truth is a classic 1937 screwball comedy directed by Leo McCarey, who won an Academy Award for his efforts. The plot concerns a squabbling husband and wife, Jerry Warriner (Cary Grant) and Lucy (Irene Dunne). When Jerry returns from a trip and discovers that Lucy has spent the weekend with her music teacher, Armand Duvalle (Alexander D'Darcy), the two get into another spat and decide to divorce. The rest of the film comically follows the couple's efforts to thwart each other's new relationships as they await the final divorce decree. Lucy begins dating a wealthy rancher, Dan Leeson (Ralph Bellamy), and Jerry dates a number of women, including heiress Barbara Vance (Molly Lamont).
