Taxi Driver is Martin Scorsese's 1976 four time oscar nominated gritty film-noir. Legendary actor Robert De Niro, in his most iconic role, plays taxi driver Travis Bickle, a Vietnam War vet who takes the night driving job to deal with his chronic insomnia. His nightly route takes him into the darkest and sketchiest parts of town and human existence. He decides to make it his personal mission to cleanse the city of it's scummy corruption. He puts himself through rigorous training in his tiny apartment and arms himself for battle. In the meantime, Travis meets Betsy (Cybil Shepherd), a beautiful young campaign worker for Senator Palantine (a man who claims to be on the same mission as Travis - but in a political way) He takes her out but unfortunately offends her due to his lack of knowledge of dating taboos of the general public. Dissatisfied with Palantine, he attempts an assassination at a rally for the politician, but is marked by the secret service and does not succeed. Soon he meets Iris (Jodie Foster) a 13 year old prostitute for scummy pimp Matthew (Harvey Keitel). He decides to free her from this corrupt lifestyle and send her back to her parents for a chance at a more normal life. Travis, along with an arsenal of firearms, launches a one-man attack on Matthew's brothel, and kills anyone in the way of rescuing young Iris. This deeply affecting and violent cinema masterpiece is a brilliant social commentary of the post-vietnam 70's by acclaimed screenwriter Paul Schrader (Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Bringing Out The Dead).MORE[EDIT]
