Suspect is a drama thriller that takes place in the nation's capital. The film begins with Judge Charles F. Lowell committing suicide after Elizabeth Rose Quinn, his secretary, is found dead. Elizabeth's murder leads to the arrest of Carl Wayne Anderson (Liam Neeson), a poor deaf-mute. Kathleen Riley (Cher), a public defender, reluctantly becomes Carl's new court appointed attorney. Carl initially appears very aggressive, but as Kathleen starts communicate with him, Carl becomes much more sociable.
