Stand and Deliver portrays the inspiring true life story of an East Los Angeles math teacher that motivates his underprivileged students to achieve beyond anyone's expectations. Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos in an Oscar-nominated performance) leaves a high-paying business job to return to the barrio and teach in public high school. He sets out to prove that low scores in the Latino community are not due to ability but communication. Although he faces a classroom full of disinterested students, like gang member Angel Guzman (Lou Diamond Phillips), Jaime captures their attention with his oddball behavior and challenging attitude.
