Spartacus is a historical drama film directed by Stanley Kubrick based on the life of a rebellious Roman slave, Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), and the ultimate rebellion against the Romans and the general Marcus Licinius Crassus (Laurence Olivier) in ancient Rome. Unruly and unbroken, the Thracian Spartacus was put to work in Libya before a violent encounter with a Roman soldier led to his purchase by Lentulus Batiatus (Peter Ustinov), a lanista, a high-level gladiator who trains other fighters for the games. Inspired by the failed attempt to attack the Romans by another gladiator, Spartacus manages to up rise against the Romans with the help of the other slaves, eventually taking over Capua and its nearby districts. All the while, Roman senators are posturing how to crush the revolt and maneuver Julius Caesar (John Gavin) into a position of power. The continuous defeat of the Roman armies and the botched manipulations pushes Crassus to seek desperate measures before the ultimate capture and crucifixions of the rebellion. Spartacus is well known for its climactic scene where the Romans seek to identify Spartacus, leading to Antoninus (Tony Curtis) and the other slaves to proclaim, "I am Spartacus". Considered by the American Film Institute as one of the top ten "classic" American epic films, Spartacus is a grand historical epic that comes to life with strong performances by its leads as well as its supporting cast, including Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton, and Charles McGraw.MORE[EDIT]
